2008 Bodegas de la Marquesa Valserrano Finca Monteviejo Rioja (91)

(27$) (95% tempranillo, the rest graciano and garnacha; all new French oak): Vivid ruby. Oak-spiced cherry anddark berries on the highly perfumed nose. Sweet and plush on entry, then tighter and more tangy in the mid-palate, offering lively black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and notes of vanilla and spicecake. Closes with good lift and spicy cut; fine-grained tannins come on late and fade nicely into the wine's energetic fruit.

2012 Bodegas de la Marquesa Valserrano Rioja Blanco (90)

($18) (95% viura and 5% malvasia; fermented and aged on its lees in the new French oak): Light yellow-gold. Smoke- and ginger- accented aromas of poached pear, tangerine and white flowers. Round and seamless on the palate, offering pliant orchard and citrus fruit flavors and a touch of buttered toast. Shows very good focus and lift on the finish, which leaves notes of anise and vanilla behind.

2008 Bodegas de la Marquesa Valserrano Reserva Rioja (90)

($45) (all tempranillo, aged in French and American oak for two years): Bright ruby. The nose displays aromas of redcurrant, dried cherry and rose, along with subtle vanilla and white pepper overtones. Lithe and precise, in the style of the vintage at its best, offering tangy red fruit and orange pith flavors that gain sweetness with air. Finishes clean and brisk, with resonating spiciness andno obvious tannins.

2005 Bodegas de la Marquesa Valserrano Rioja Gran Reserva (90)

($55) (90% tempranillo and 10% graciano): Deep ruby. Spice-accented cherry and dark berries on the nose. Dry and tightly wound on entry, the smoother and sweeter in the middle, offering lively flavors of bitter cherry and boysenberry. Sharply focused on the finish, which features silky tannins and a hint of dark chocolate.
